royal ontario museum - since i mentioned the rom in the chimpanzee post, i thought i'd check out their site, because being in the museum was really cool. i was with louis, who is 3, and is mostly interested in tools and wheels, so i didn't get to see everything. but the website is super-cool, a lot of the exhibitions and galleries are really well done in an online format, in the "explore and learn" section. (and some of them are badly done, or not even there) and check out the "renaissance rom" for some crazy bold architecture - they're adding a new wing that looks like a quartz crystal cluster!
CubeScoot - If I had a Mac Cube and I kept it on the floor I would definitely get one of these, but that would never happen.
Strangebanana has a new random look every time you reload. For some reason purple and green seem to come up most often, but once and a while you get something not ugly.
Some scientists are saying chimps and bonobos are more closely related to us than previously thought, and that they should be moved into the genus Homo (from genus Pan), becoming Homo troglodytes and Homo paniscus. Welcome, guys. (I'm wondering if anyone considered changing humans to Pan sapiens.) (link via kottke) Update: And of course there is a study suggesting just the opposite.
Bit Torrent is a new file sharing system, which requires you to jump through a few hoops to get a file, but it is the best way to get those television episodes that you missed or can't get on Canadian TV. The magic of Bit Torrent is that you are downloading from other downloaders and they are downloading from you so that there is less demand on the person who put up the file in the first place and you get a faster download. (Usually.)
Joss Whedon's 10 favourite Buffy episodes - And they are the best ones.
http://halfkeyboard.com/propaganda/ - i can't understand why they use propagnda in the url here. is it just me, or is that bad marketing?
when i was little - i know this is on metafilter (boo!?) but this one baby just cracked me up. dan - can't you just see him saying "i like this!!!"
Law & Order for Mac - It's hilarious that Ainslie and I were talking about this yesterday, and I was saying that it was unlikely to come out for the Mac. And now, here it is. (Try the online demo.) Now someone needs to come out with a Dirty Dancing game so I can live out all my Jerry Orbach fantasies!
The Philosophy of Poisonous Snakes - A discussion of the many underappreciated books and articles written by poisonous snakes.
Went to see X-men 2 last night in Banff. Lots of fun. Alan Cumming is great casting as Nightcrawler. There's one line in the movie which I think is just wrong. (I suspect it was changed at the last minute without really thinking about the context.) I won't give away any plot information (for those who haven't seen it yet) but at one point Storm says to Nightcrawler "I have faith in you." And faith is the right concept at the time, but the issue isn't whether she has faith in him, or he has faith in himself, or anything like that. It's not about confidence. The issue is whether his faith will allow him to do something he hasn't done before, take a risk, and launch into the unknown. It was so close to being the right line, it just missed by a bit.
Recordable iPods? - In neverending iPod news, some people have found a secret recording mode on the new iPods. It seems that Apple could turn the iPod into a recording device with a simple software update. (One more reason to get one, Andrea.)
