Transcript of a speech by Clay Shirky explains how groups on the net can't help but follow certain patterns dictated by human nature. Very informative.

Shirkey's reference to way that groups can not exist without members and members can't exist without groups reminded me of Ken Wilber's term holon which is part of his "Sex, Ecology, and Spirituality" and "A Brief History of Everything." The universe is made up of holons -- things that are whole in and of themselves but are also a part of a larger whole, which in turn is part of a larger whole, etc.
